Photo Gallery: A Day in the Life of General Sessions Judge Gilley

From the Daily News Journal

MURFREESBORO — General Sessions Judge Toby Gilley spends most of his days settling arguments between the people who come to his courtroom.

Gilley, who presides over Part III of Rutherford County General Sessions Court, said he mostly hears probate and civil cases, along with mental health commitment hearings and driving on revoked license status dockets. His colleagues Ben Hall McFarlin, Barry Tidwell and Lisa Eischeid preside over criminal court.

The judge’s favorite part of his job is “helping people sort through their differences when they can't do so on their own.”

He sees his role as one of a patient arbiter, who can apply law and precedent to help people solve problems during difficult times.

“I pray every day for wisdom and compassion as I carry out the great responsibility with which I have been entrusted,” Gilley said.
