Motions Practice

Event Description

This session provides a practical and strategic overview of motion practice in Tennessee juvenile court, emphasizing effective advocacy within dependency and neglect proceedings. Participants will review key procedural rules—such as Tenn. R. Juv. P. 105 and 305—and explore motions addressing discovery, reasonable efforts, evidence, and child testimony. The training integrates local rule variations and case law including In re Carrington H. (2016), In re Kaliyah S. (2015), and In re Kansas B. (2022). Through discussion and case scenarios, attendees will apply motion-strategy principles to court situations, balancing advocacy, efficiency, and the best interests of the child. The session concludes with a panel conversation with veteran attorneys Wende Rutherford and Amanda King, who will discuss practical application, their experiences with motions practice and takeaways on clarity, zealous representation, and professionalism.

This course is approved for 1.5 general hours.
