Supreme Court Names Lee Ramsey Reporter of Advisory Commission

The Tennessee Supreme Court today appointed Lee Ramsey as Reporter for the Court’s Advisory Commission on the Rules of Practice and Procedure. Ramsey replaces Don Paine, who retired from the position last year after 35 years of service to the Commission. Paine continues to serve the Commission as Reporter Emeritus.

The Commission meets four times a year to vote on proposed amendments to the rules of appellate procedure, civil procedure, criminal procedure, juvenile procedure and the rules of evidence. Members of the Advisory Commission are appointed by the Supreme Court.

As Reporter for the Commission, Ramsey will draft proposed rules amendments for the Commission’s review and also serve the Commission in an administrative capacity.

“Lee has been a tremendous asset to the Commission as he has spent countless hours helping me draft proposed rules and offering insight and recommendations that I have invariably followed,” said J. Brook Lathram, chair of the Advisory Commission on the Rules of Practice and Procedure. “Lee is the perfect choice for the Reporter position and I know he will continue to serve the Commission and the Court admirably.”

Ramsey is a staff attorney for the Tennessee Supreme Court, a position he has held for nearly 20 years. In 2000, the Court appointed Ramsey as one of the non-voting liaisons to the Advisory Commission on the Rules of Practice and Appellate Procedure. Ramsey has served as Chair of the American Bar Association’s Council of Appellate Staff Attorneys and has also served three years on the program committee of the Appellate Judges Education Institute.

Prior to joining the Supreme Court’s staff, Ramsey spent four years as general counsel for the Tennessee Health Facilities Commission and spent five years in private practice. Ramsey received his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee and his law degree from the Washington College of Law at American University in Washington, D.C.
