History and Milestones

Courts and the judiciary have been a vital part of the state's history since its inception in 1796. From precedent-setting cases to major milestones, the judicial branch has evolved over the past 225-plus years just as the State of Tennessee as a whole has grown and changed. The thousands of men and women who have donned a judicial robe over the centuries have been leaders, scholars, influencers, and, most of all, public servants. From the smallest courthouses in rural communities to thriving cities, they have tackled difficult cases and issues that often divide communities. To celebrate the state's 225th anniversary of statehood on June 1, 2021, the following multimedia timeline videos were created:

1796 - 1900

Please note, several of the major cases decided by the courts in the 1800s and early 1900s involve issues of race and slavery that are troubling when viewed in modern context.
