Update – Sedley Alley clemency request

Nashville – 10:17 p.m. CDT: Following the United States Supreme Court’s denial of Sedley Alley’s appeals for a stay of his scheduled execution, his attorneys have renewed their request for clemency from Governor Bredesen. The Governor believes that this matter has been thoroughly and appropriately reviewed by the courts and therefore has denied clemency.

Statement from TN Attorney General Paul G. Summers regarding the
limited reprieve for death row inmate Sedley Alley:

"Since two courts of competent jurisdiction have already decided DNA
testing would be worthless in this case, I am confident that the
Tennessee Supreme Court should set a new execution date. Therefore, we
will be asking the Court to set the execution on a date soon after the
reprieve expires."
