Commission Accepting Applications for Upcoming 2014 Vacancies on Court of Appeals, Court of Criminal Appeals

Nashville, Tenn. – The Judicial Nominating Commission is now accepting applications for the judicial vacancies on the Court of Appeals and the Court of Criminal Appeals. The vacancies will be created September 1, 2014 when the terms of Judge Patricia J. Cottrell and Judge Joseph M. Tipton expire.

Both judges have notified the governor that they will not be seeking re-election in the August 2014 general election.

Any interested applicant must be a licensed attorney who is at least 30 years of age, a resident of the state for five years, and a resident of their circuit or district for one year and must reside in the grand division for the court seat they are seeking. The Court of Appeals opening is in the Middle Division and the Court of Criminal Appeals opening is in the Eastern Division.

Applicants must complete the designated application, which is available at here and submit it to the Administrative Office of the Courts by Wednesday, June 12 ,2013 at noon CDT.

The Judicial Nominating Commission will interview all qualified applicants for the Court of Criminal Appeals opening Thursday, June 27 in Chattanooga. The JNC will meet Friday, June 28 in Nashville to interview Court of Appeals candidates.

The meetings will include a public hearing in which members of the public may express their opinions about the applicants. The interview, public hearing and deliberation process will be open to the public.
