Kathleen Gomes has been selected as interim probate judge by the Shelby County Commission.
The selection was announced Monday. Gomes replaces retiring Probate Court Judge Robert Benham, who has served in that role since 1997.
Gomes has practiced law in Tennessee since 1980 and is a partner with Peppel, Gomes & MacIntosh of Memphis.
Five candidates had been in the running for the post. The interim judge will serve until the county election in August 2014.
Benham has practiced law for 34 years and was scheduled to retire from the bench March 28, although the exact date is yet to be determined.
