Mission Statement

The primary responsibility of the Tennessee Supreme Court Libraries is to support the research needs of the justices of the Tennessee Supreme Court and the Appellate Courts, along with the attorneys and clerks on their staff.  In addition to supporting the needs of the Supreme Court and the Appellate Bench, the Supreme Court Libraries provide a legal resource to the state and local judiciary, members of the state bar, and the general public.

The Tennessee Supreme Court Libraries include branch libraries in Knoxville, Nashville, and Jackson, serving the three grand divisions of the state.  Contrary to conventional wisdom, the Tennessee Supreme Court Library at Nashville has never been established by statute, although the State Law Library Commission and the Jackson Public Law Library have a clearer history in the statutes.  It’s birth coincided with the construction of the new Supreme Court Building in 1938.

Services

The Collection

To fulfill its mission, the Tennessee Supreme Court Libraries maintain a varied collection of approximately 120,000-125,000 volumes, of which 55,000 are housed in  Nashville, 40,000 in Jackson, and 30,000 in Knoxville.  The collection consists of primary and secondary source materials such as Federal and State reporters, statutes, digests (all available state codes and digests are represented), published opinions, treatises, and general sources such as ALR, CJS, and American Jurisprudence.  Other materials include law periodicals,  citators,  official reports, form books,  restatements of the law,  and a variety of reference materials such as   dictionaries and other research guides.

Along with current legal materials, the Supreme Court Library at Nashville has an archive of historical treatise material, expired Tennessee codes (Lawson’s, 1715), municipal charters, and unpublished court opinions dating back to 1904.  Much of this material is not available elsewhere.

Not all titles are available at all branches.  In the near future, we will provide an on-line catalog listing the titles at specific locations.
